TV Shows

Shameless (Season 6): Living his life in a perpetual stupor, deadbeat dad Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) must rely on his six kids to keep the household running and his family together. Based on the UK series of the same name, this US remake is dramatic, but it’s also funny (and more than a little bit raunchy, too). Featuring terrific performances, especially from Macy and Emmy Rossum, who plays Frank’s eldest daughter, Fiona, Shameless’s sixth season has now been added to Netflix in its entirety.

Platoon: A classic Vietnam War film from director (and Vietnam veteran) Oliver Stone, Platoon tells the devastating story of a young soldier (Charlie Sheen) who finds himself torn between two mentors with opposing philosophies – the laid-back and friendly Sgt. Elias (WIllem Dafoe) and the battle-hardened but psychopathic Sgt. Barnes (Tom Berenger). The film’s tagline states that “the first casualty of war is innocence,” and that couldn’t be more true here. Platoon is one of the most harrowing and powerful war films of all time, so it’s no wonder that the it won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Ray Donovan (Season 3): A gritty (and witty) crime drama, Ray Donovan stars Liev Schreiber as a professional ‘fixer’ that makes problems disappear for LA’s rich and famous elite. If you’ve watched and enjoyed the first two seasons on Stan, you’ll be happy to know that as of today, the third season is available on the service in its entirety.

Turbo Kid: Sort of like a cross between BMX Bandits and Mad Max, Turbo Kid is a retrotastic ’80s-style movie about a totally rad teen scavenger who becomes a reluctant hero when he meets a special girl named Apple (Laurence Leboeuf). Humorously set in the post-apocalyptic year of 1997, the film sees Turbo Kid (Munro Chambers) do battle with a pack of murderous wasteland bandits led by a tyrannical overlord named Zeus (Michael Ironside). Thankfully, Turbo Kid has a turbo-charged weapon in his possession that has the power to make people explode into gory chunks of viscera! Equal parts adorable and ultra-violent, Turbo Kid is a nostalgic and entertaining co-production between New Zealand and Canada that features a likeable cast and a fantastic synth score by the EDM group, Le Matos. Fans of Kung Fury and Hobo with a Shotgun will love this movie.

Sneaky Pete (Season 1): Set to arrive over the weekend, the latest Amazon Original series stars Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar, Friends) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and concerns an ex-con who assumes the identity of his old cellmate after he becomes the target of a notorious gangster. Though Cranston’s acting role on the show is small, he is actually the series creator, so we can expect Sneaky Pete to live up the high level of quality we’ve come to expect from him.
