WICKER PARK — Wicker Park residents mourning the absence of Saved By the Max soon will have another pop-up restaurant in the neighborhood: Riot Feast, a collaboration between Chicago-based Riot Fest and the Saved by the Max crew, soon will bring a new, carnival-themed bar and restaurant to the spot.
Beginning on July 8 and lasting for three months at 1941 W. North Ave., Riot Feast will be a “communal family-style pop-up dining experience in a turn-of-the-century carnival style environment,” according to the Saved by the Max pop-up founders and executive chef Brian Fisher.
The restaurant will be open Wednesday through Sunday nights, with an after-hours late-night bar menu to be served on Friday and Saturday starting at 10 p.m., when the space will transform into “a carnival speakeasy” to provide Chicago’s miscreants and ne’er-do-wells a place where they can feel at home, organizers said.
There will also be two seatings per night at 6 and 8 p.m.
Tickets for communal dining (GA) or reserved elevated tables (VIP) will go on sale at 11 a.m. Friday at the restaurant’s website, theriotfeast.tocktix.com.
Derek Berry, Zack Eastman and Steve Harris, the self-described “fan boy creators” of Saved by The Max, said in a news release that they wanted to find a new innovative project that they could bring into the storefront in Wicker Park’s Flat Iron Arts building.
Saved By the Max closed May 31 and is headed to Los Angeles.
The men connected with Riot Fest’s Michael “Riot Mike” Petryshyn to create The Riot Feast restaurant and bar. Founded in 2005, Riot Fest is a three-day punk-rock music festival and carnival in Douglas Park.
Saved by The Max’s chef Fisher (Schwa, Entente) is collaborating with the Riot Fest creative team to develop a “unique Riot Fest-inspired menu in a fascinating turn-of-the-century carnival-style environment,” the group said.
“I’ve always wanted to be a part of a restaurant, but time and life constraints made that seem impossible,” Petryshyn said in a statement. “But, thanks to Derek, Zack and Steve’s vision, they have given us an opportunity to create something special. And we want to do nothing short of wowing our fans with this experience.”
