Our films in Cannes 2017:

Baobab Studios is pleased to announce the selection of two new boundary-pushing virtual reality projects at the Cannes Film Festival and Annecy International Animation Film Festival: Rainbow Crow – a first look at a completely unique new series featuring original music and voice by John Legend and additional voices by Diego Luna  and Constance Wu, and ASTEROIDS! – the highly anticipated follow-up to Baobab’s Emmy award-winning INVASION!. Both have been selected for the Cannes NEXT VR Showcase and also for the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

The first animated VR series inspired by a Native American legend, Rainbow Crow is about a bird with the most dazzling plumage and mellifluous voice, who, after the planet turns dark and cold, must journey far from home to bring light back to the world.
Narrated by Kiowa-Caddo tribal elder Randy Edmonds, 82-year-old lifelong crusader for Native American rights and founder of the National Urban Indian Council, Rainbow Crow is executive produced by musician, producer and activist John Legend, who also portrays the legendary title character. Additionally, Rogue One star Diego Luna and Fresh Off The Boat star Constance Wu round out the voice cast.
Blending original music, unique pastel art style and storytelling together in a way not yet seen in VR, Baobab is bridging old traditions with modern narrative to reach a new generation, innovating technology to present a legendary story with themes of diversity, self-acceptance and sacrifice, and moving from darkness into the light.
Rainbow Crow made its World Premiere at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival Virtual Arcade.

ASTEROIDS! is the highly anticipated follow-up to Baobab’s  Emmy award-winning first project INVASION!. In ASTEROIDS! you take on the role of a helper-bot alongside a pair of quirky aliens, Mac and Cheez, in a completely immersive story filled with humor, excitement and compassion. Along with another robot sidekick, Peas, you embark on a dangerous mission in deep outer space. The chance to prove your worth finally comes when the spaceship is endangered by teeth-gnashing space-bugs and careening asteroids. With the others up to their alien eyeballs in trouble, it’s your job to save the day!
Mac and Cheez, the two lovable bumbling aliens from INVASION! return, this time in danger and needing your help.  Although menacing at first blush, with the help of the voice of Elizabeth Banks as Cheez, ASTEROIDS! aims to reveal more of the aliens’ endearing story in a virtual reality experience that allows the audience to experience an empathetic and interactive role.
ASTEROIDS! had its World Premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

Both new projects from Baobab Studios incorporate different levels of interactivity, in which the audience may choose to take action to influence the stories and visual universes of each VR experience. Eric Darnell’s vision combines the empathy of film, the agency of games and the motivation of real life – giving the audience reason to act because they care about the characters, not to win.
Baobab Studios inspires you to dream by through immersive VR storytelling experiences that bring out your sense of wonder. Started in 2015 by industry leaders Maureen Fan, Eric Darnell, and Larry Cutler, Baobab’s first project is the Emmy award-winning and critically acclaimed “INVASION!,” a top performing VR animation available on multiple VR platforms. “ASTEROIDS!” is the studio’s follow-up VR animation, named the Best VR Experience at the 2017 Vision VR/AR Summit, with the full episode schedule for release in 2017. Baobab recently completed Series B funding of $25M, bringing their total raised to $31M, making them one of the largest in independent VR studios today. Funding comes from: Comcast Ventures, HTC, Samsung, Shari Redstone’s Advancit Capital, The Chernin Group, Horizons Ventures, Twentieth Century Fox, Evolution Media Partners (backed by TPG Growth and CAA), China’s Shanghai Media Group, Youku Global Media Fund and LDV Partners, Zynga co-founder Mark Pincus, PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel.
