Travelers snuck in a fun nod to Bungie’s Destiny in its first season, which is all the more clever considering the show’s name.New Netflix sci-fi series
The Canadian drama, which premiered on Showcase in October before Netflix debuted it internationally in late December, tosses in the reference in episode 8, “Donner.” Reilly Dolman’s Philip Pearson is making bets on a horse race, and the horse’s names sound strikingly familiar.
Four of the five horses mentioned — Patience and Time, Touch of Malice, The Last Word and The Fourth Horseman — are the names of exotic guns in Destiny. The fifth, Down and Doubt, is the name of a legendary hand cannon. The real question is who on the Travelers staff is the Destiny fan. Writers Ashley Park and Pat Smith? Showrunner Brad Wright? Someone else who snuck these names in over everyone’s head?
Of course, the reference gets even more meta considering the significance of “The Traveler” to Destiny’s lore. The mysterious spherical entity, who gazes down on humanity’s last city, presumably doesn’t have as much of a preference for time travel as the show’s Travelers, though.
Netflix debuted a lot of new bingeable content over the holidays, from The OA to Trollhunters to the Sense8 special. The streaming service also dropped some new excellent international sci-fi series, including Brazilian dystopian thriller 3% and, of course, Travelers. Travelers stars Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) and focuses on a group of FBI agents who send their consciousnesses back in time in order to save humanity.
